Uh oh - Tuesday and Wednesday

I should have known that I was perhaps hitting it a bit too hard. I need to remember that my sleep quality is not what it used to be which is a big issue for recovery. Was feeling a bit under the weather Tuesday and feel horrible today. I plan to do some epic sleeping tonight which should help. Fingers crossed.

Tuesday 7/13 (60:00)
Easy 30 minute run in the am with D
30 minute bike ride (starting raining pretty hard, felt iffy, went home)

Wednesday 7/14- DAY OFF, focusing on getting healthy

Monday July 12 - recovery run

Wow, I was REALLY sore today after yesterday's workout. That said, it feels great to be reminded of what it feels like to be an athlete. There is a huge difference, mentally and physically, between exercising and training. I prefer to train - pregnancy seems to mandate that you exercise! If somebody had told me before I got pregnant that 6 months post-partum I would still be "getting back up to speed" I would never have believed yet. That said, if I hadn't started running 2 weeks post-partum I would not have lost so much time to recovery and would probably be back in action. All things considered, Saturdays' 60 mile ride plus Sunday's tough workout plus a 7ish mile run today are helping me realize that I am doing okay.

60:00 run - Fort Greene through park, to Brooklyn Bridge, to Manhattan Bridge and home.

Felt great to really push it today

Solid ride

54 solid miles on Long Island. Sam kept asking me "are you okay" until I finally said "I am fine, why?" Apparently I was not riding very fast although my effort was solid. Someone seems to have forgotten that I took a full year off the bike!
3:20 ride time

easy Friday

5.5 mile early morning run with D
I am so thankful every time my little man cooperates on runs. He seems to like to go fast...much happier in the stroller running than walking!
Kept today easy in preparation for a good run with Sam tomorrow.

HOT ride

1:00 bike ride with a 24:00 TT
-easy spin to the park
-1 moderate / easy loop
-2.5 loops hard
-1 moderate / easy loop
-easy spin home

2:00 plank
50 hip thrusts
stretching

It's funny to me to realize that I can get a decent workout done in 1 hour on the bike. In the past when I was training for Ironman I did very little intensity so I felt like I needed to spend at least a few hours for it to count. Don't have that luxury or desire right now but I feel like the interval work is helping!

On the nutrition front we made a great dinner of swordfish, veggies, kale and salad and topped it off with one scoop of fro yo from the ice cream stand across the street. I can't believe it took us this long to try it given we can literally see it from our steps:-)

Declan had a rough night last night .... so Sam and I had a very rough night as well. Very tired today and my legs felt less than sparky on my ride.

3 mile easy run

Sunday's workout

Got started early to ensure Sam had a chance to run before we all headed off to D's swimming lessons. He is not even 6 months old and managed to actually swim under water from the instructor to Sam!

Unfortunately, the post swimming nap was interrupted by a marching band going underneath his window. Our little guy is a great city dwelller but even he has his limits:-)

Workout:

5 miles of intervals on the elliptical (can't believe I am back on the e!)
45 minutes Vinyasa yoga - felt great on the hips.

We had another fantastic meal thanks to the farmer's market - kale with sauteed onions and tomatoes, roasted veggies, salad and chicken. Delicious.

Big Ride...

So with a little guy at home heading out for a ride is not quite as easy as it used to be. This challenge is compounded by the fact that Brooklyn is not quite the cycling mecca that we were accustomed to in CA. So, pretty much every ride that Sam and I do together involves childcare as well as driving 45 minutes to start our rides.

So, this morning, after a great 4.5 mile run / walk with the Lululemon run group that I am coaching, Sam and I left Declan with our nanny and headed out for a ride (in 100 degree heat!). Our plan was about 50 coastal miles on Long Island. Unfortunately, major mechanical troubles changed our plans. After about 2 minutes on our bikes we were back in the car and headed to the bike shop. A quick stop at the farmer's market and we were back home without a workout!

Thankfully, Maggie was still with D so we headed to the gym and tried to remain as positive as possible.

today's workout:
4.5 mile run /walk in the am
5 minute bike ride:-)

3 miles of intervals on the elliptical trainer (hip was bothering me a bit so no running)
50 kettle bell swings
50 squats with a band
50 clam shells
50 lunges each leg
50 push-ups

evening walk with D and Sam

We finished off our day with a fantastic dinner of Cobb salads comprised almost entirely of ingredients from the farmer's market. Not bad at all...

6 months already!

Wow- so somehow 6 months have passed (almost) since our little D came into the world. It's been quite a journey. I certainly don't have the time or inclination to sum up the last 6 months in this blog so I will focus on what I've always been about - "training."

1. Being fit for delivery was KEY. Declan rocked and I rebounded in no time. We even walked home from the hospital.
2. 1 week post delivery I was 6 pounds above my pre-prego weight, I thought getting back in shape would be a breeze!
3. 5 days post delivery I was walking a few miles and doing a mini dumbell circuit at home
5. 1 week post delivery I went to the Bar Method
6. 2 weeks post delivery I ran

When D was seven weeks old we moved to NYC and joined Crossfit. I kept running. At this point I felt like I was getting back in action.

Unfortunately, a hip injury followed and soon I was off the running:-( I also was not losing ANY weight. I was exclusively nursing and Declan was eating around the clock. My appetite was insane- truly a bottomless pit.

I have spent the last two months rehabbing my hip. Sam and I have started riding again and I've done quite a bit of spinning and interval work on the elliptical. Feeling okay but quite a ways from the body I am used to. The two times I've tried to eat super clean to lean out my milk supply has dropped way off. My body is clinging to fat reserves like it never has before. I am pretty sure I will be holding onto this baby weight until D is done nursing.

But, that is okay with me. Feeding him is worth it- seems a small price to pay (most of the time...) My current focus is on getting fit and eating enough to stay a bit fat - quite a unique set of circumstances:-)

So, with that I am back to logging my workouts.
